Singing the Blues

                     Happy Monday!

I hope you had a great weekend. We enjoyed a
lovely spring day on Saturday and then woke up
Sunday morning the a winter wonderland.
So today I am singing the blues!
I bought those two little bowls last week to
plant blue violas in but alas none as blooming
here yet so that will have to wait.

                                                                         I have some campanulas blooming
                                                                          indoors for some spring color.
I found some iris reticulata blooming
in the garden along with some crocus
                                                                      and snowdrops.....always exciting to
see color in the garden again.

I took these shots yesterday but Sunday
was a whole different picture as seen below.
So, somewhere under several cm. of snow,
these babies are blooming away. The good news
is milder temperatures are returning so the snow
will quickly melt into the ground.
This was the scene here Sunday morning.
The pond has melted and we have had a
pair of Canada geese return to nest again.

I spotted these robins enjoying the seedpods
on our sumac.....good to know they have food
even if the ground is covered in snow.

Hope you have a happy day!

                                                                           Carolyn

Spring Cheer

                   Happy Weekend!

Just a little spring cheer for you on
               this spring weekend.

Our tulips are growing well in the
garden but it will be awhile before
they bloom so in the meantime I
                                                                             am enjoying these locally grown
                                                                             greenhouse tulips from Vanco.
                                                                              These beauties bring me so
                                                                              much pleasure.
                                                                             My transferware does as well.

                         Mauve and white transferware
is hard to find around here.

                                                                               A mixed set.

Are you enjoying tulips in your
                                                                         garden yet......or patiently waiting
                                                                         like me?

                                                                                       Enjoy the rest of your
                                                                                       weekend!

                                                                                                  Carolyn

Quick Ideas for Frost Protection of Plants in a Vegetable Garden

Quick Ideas for Frost Protection of Plants in a Vegetable Garden

Well as the story goes... "What? Frost this time of year. Are you kidding me?" This is the time of the season where we have put out a lot of our plants, some warm weather plants, but mostly the cool weather crops. Luckily the cool weather crops can take a frost and the leaves can freeze. The problem is that we don't want their roots systems to freeze. And any frost damages the warm weather crops.

If we get a light frost, the cool weather plants survive. The leaves might get beat up and new ones may need to grow but the plant survives. Cool weather crop leaves can freeze and survive. The warm weather plants leaves can't do this and are destroyed if they freeze.

If the root system or area where the roots and stem meet, freeze out hard, the plant can die. So with a 25 degree night on the horizon... here are some tips that I will use to add some protection to my cold weather crops like kale, lettuces, broccoli, endives, beets and kohlrabi.

Good Luck with Your Garden,

The Color Purple

                   Hello everyone,

Today my theme is the color purple or at
least shades there of.
The lupins are just stating to grow again
here .....so many plants are poking up now.
I am hoping they will spread around our pond
as they grow wild here in ditches etc..

                                                                          Delphiniums and clematis.

                                                                             Clematis
                                                                         Looking forward to the lilacs
                                                                         blooming in our garden.

                                                                              Phlox and beebalm.
                                                                            Lupines growing in the wild.

We have lots of clematis in our
garden to add beauty and height.
For a softer shade of purple....
                                                                         an old handmade quilt.
                                                                            On our summer porch

                                                                              An old wooden bucket full
                                                                              of lilacs.
                                                                                       Sensation lilac is so pretty!
Well, that is it for The Color Purple for today.

This is the time of year that I am a little starved
for color as I wait for the grass to turn green,
the trees to leaf out and of course the garden to
                                                               burst into color!
                                                                                            Thank you for your visit,

                                                                                                                  Carolyn

Antique Blue & White China

        Welcome April!

It is so nice to welcome in April with
a day warm enough to do some garden
cleanup as our snow is pretty much all
gone. I also woke up to the sound of birds
chirping away in the garden....always makes
me happy!

I thought I would change my display
of china on the table where I have my
afternoon tea.

I love this antique china but
         haven't shared it for awhile
so I thought you might enjoy
seeing it too!

                                                                      I bought these locally at
                                                                      antique shops and although they
are different patterns they are similar
                                                                     soft color tones.

                                                                              Mix and match
One of my favorite tea time spots
until it is warm enough to enjoy
tea in the garden.

I love this platter that I bought at
                                                                Timeworn Treasures and Antiques
                                                                last year.

I hope you have a great weekend
and thank you for your visits and
lovely comments.

                Take care,

                               Carolyn
